Of course this would be followed with the appropriate mass conditioning response of dozens of "Brother you look so much better now".

Until a man wearing a nicely kept beard is viewed no differently as a man with a nice tie then the beard will still bear its "well... it's not a sin but..... are you sure you don't want to shave that thing off" badge of dishonor.
So true.

HAHA!!! Sherri, believe me...the statement was more TIC. I belong (happily) to a UPC church. However, I have always thought it was the most STUPID idea ever to think a beard had anything to do with salvation or doctrine...however, I know many will equate it...unfortunately. Saying that, I also know that not everyone thinks that....but obviously the man in question in this post sees it as such to have to "explain" the beard to all UPC people he came into contact with. Amazing he would not tell EVERYONE.....

He does tell almost everyone, because he has never had a beard before. So people comment about it. But, it is very irritating to see the UPC people turn their nose up. My mom tells him not to "hunt them down" and tell them, let them think what they will. Most UPC people think it's wrong whether it is for Messiah or not.

Facial hair is something I wouldn't promote or prohibit either.
Facial hair is not just a UPC "sin."
Our ALJC pastor said in a Sunday night sermon, "The Bible says that a man is supposed to be clean shaven."

Actually, you are painting the entire org in a light that is not true. While there are many that preach against facial hair, there are also many that do not. This is not an organizational thing. I am sure it was back in the day. But not any longer.

The Beard goes back further than the Hippie days. It started when people were trying not to associate themselves with communism. Karl Marks was known for his long beard and many communist leaders followed suite including Fidel Castro and others. This is how many churches adobted this discipline following suite with American leaders at the time.
Being clean shaven as a sign of uniformity goes way back. Napoleon Bonoparte made it mandatory for French soldiers to be clean shaven.
