I think there was a groundswell of men that wanted the issue dealt with as it was considered heresy. Had it been allowed to remain I think we would have seen a significant departure of those who would not be aligned with this type of error. I could be wrong on that but I well remember the conversations about the issue.
I think you're right, and I am glad it was dealt with. I feel the same way about the magic hair deal. I wish they would deal with it in the same way.

Perhaps not. I actually think it would have only because it was being pushed to the forefront by it's proponents. Had it not been dealt with then many, many more would have left the organization IMO.

I don't think he intended to get rid of anybody either. I just think he overestimated his influence and as a result a bunch of guys left. He tends to do that. You can get away with the 'my way or the highway' approach at a local level, but on the national level when leading your peers it gets different results. Perhaps NAU wasn't so dumb after all; he didn't contend for his view to the disunity of the group. And especially not so over something as inconsequential and irrelevant as TV ministry/advertisement.
Oh, but he did, he just did it on the opposite side of the issue over thirty years ago. He couldn't contain the group that left this time, rather the liberals left.

I don't think he really believes a split was inevitable. I'm sure he knew it would stir them up, as it had in times past. Maybe another conference. Maybe some more "forums", but not leaving the mother ship.

Not saying I agree with the Holy Hair doctrine because I don't, but does obedience to the commandments of God reciprocate in blessings from God?

the more I think about this the more I can escape the notion that it is some form of huberous to think one can identify a mans legacy before he even leaves office.
