I wrote this long ago, Mother Falla...
Eli sits "by the wayside watching." There is probably not a more tragic statement than that. How sad to have been in the flow of His presence and end up sitting by the wayside...watching. No longer was he on the playing field or even in the grand stand. Eli's training and background meant little as he was sitting it out on the bench...watching. Well into his 90's, he sits and recalls past victories. He remembers the days of his youth, when life seemed less difficult. He recalls the days as spiritual leader and advisor to God's people. His mind reflects on the former things, but there is no joy. So it is that we find him here, too old and too tired to even try to change things, with indifference placing him "by the wayside watching."
What a tragic commentary...to know His voice and remember how it used to be, but the glory is departed.

The primary way God speaks to his children is through their spirits. "The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly" Proverbs 20:27. Sons of God are led by the Spirit of God. Lk 4:1, Mat 4:1, Rom 8:14. The way to be sure it is God's voice, is to compare the message to the written Word. Of course, He will never say anything that contradicts his written word.
By muttering God's Word to yourself, day and night, you can train your spirit to hear God's voice. To become mature spiritually, you must become skilled in the Word, then you will be able to discern between good and evil. Heb 5:14.
This is perceived as an intuition, an inward witness. Not usually a strong impression, but just a feeling, which one can easily overlook. Often you can look back in hindsight and say: "Oh, I had that feeling, if I had only listened to my spirit, I wouldn't have had that accident or made that mistake".
You cannot hear the voice of God, with your natural ears. You cannot see God with your natural eyes. You must hear God and see God through your spirit.
No spirit can communicate with mankind, directly through the five senses, without a body. That's why the devil had to use the body of a serpent, in order to communicate with Eve. No Alien spirit, (I refer to the movie), can materialize physically and do you physical harm. That's why no demons ever cohabitated with women and caused giants to be born. Rosemary's Baby, (I refer to the book) is a fiction. Star Wars, (I refer to the movies) are fictions.
Man is a three part being: spirit, soul and body, but is just one person. The spirit of man resides deep in the core of a man, in the area of the reins, (kidneys) and the belly. ( Rev 2:23; Ps 19:27) The heart of man is often used interchangably with the spirit. It (heart) may actually be the bridge between the spirit and the soul. The soul is the mind, will, and emotions, which resides in the brain. Man is made in the image of God, therefore; God is a three part being, but just one person.

This could become a very deep and edifying thread.

I agree fully that this could become a deep and edifying thread.
God has a 24/7/365 & 1/4th, broadband streaming voice mail beaming staight at every one of his children. It's just that we don't always have our 'puters tuned in. God is always trying to speak to all of us, we have to get real quiet, and listen very carefully. Sometimes it may take two or three days of quiet time to hear. But it is always worth the effort. Peace comes.

Hello, Big-Larry,!

God!! Would you say this is an improvment over the "Royal Telephone"!!
LOL!! Just teasing! How have you been, Big-Larry! Been missing you on
here! Know you had the Conference there in Mesquite last week. Heard
it was good!

I was just reading thru this one and I wanted to share my expierences...
It is so true that the more time you spend talking to God the easier it is to hear his voice. I know when he speaks to me in my thoughts...its hard to explain... but I just know.
Also, I like to keep a prayer journal. I use it many different ways. And as crazy as some may think it is... sometimes He speaks thru me and gives me the words to write down. I love reading back and seeing what God said to me when I was going thru whatever I was going thru, or being reminded of promises he's made!

Well, who else could have been in that room with Samuel?
That might not take a lot of discernment.
He missed it when he thought Hannah was drunk.

I have mixed feelings on this subject.
What gives when two "men of God" you respect and trust, arrive at conflicting conclusions about the "voice of God"?
There have been times when I was convinced I heard the voice of God - yes indeed, but there have been times I was wrong as well.
Here are a few things in this regard that I hold as sacred.
1. God's word is true.
2. Our understanding of God's Word is flawed - every one of us.
We would do well to remember this in our dealings with all men.
3. One can believe they have "the whole truth" and be decieved.
4. It is our reliance on Christ that makes the difference - not our intellectual superiority.
5. The first four points may be wrong!

Well, well, I know it is God's voice.
I had opened this thread up to say these very same things. Here, it has already been said with even greater clarity than I could have said it.
Let us remember:
Psa 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
The principles of the ORACLES (the Word and voice) of God come only to those who are so exercised by the Word to hear the voice of God. Though there are times you may hear the voice of God which may seem audible to you, yet they are not audible. It sounds only in the spirit of man, that is addressed to the citadel of his affections. Thus, by his sanctified affections, purged by the Word of God and a life according to it, is he capable of detecting it and discerning that it is in truth the Word of the Lord coming to him.
Hbr 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
The voice of the stranger, being many voices in the world, will appeal to affections of self and the world by which one is easily misled. However, the Word of the Lord will never mislead one.
