His biggest upside was the fact that John McCain was too much of a nice guy. McCain almost never spoke about Obama's record or baggage (most pro-abortion/death candidates in the history of our nation for one). He also refused to address the legitimate problems of Obama's past association with unrepentant domestic terrorists, as well as with well known racists such as Louis Farahakhan and Jeremiah Wright.
Further John McCain tied the hands of his greatest asset and barely let her do much independent speaking, and set her up with very hostile interviewers who edited her comments to make her look like an idiot.
Because of all of these things, I would say that Obama's greatest upside in the '08 campaign was John McCain.

Funny thing is, people complain all the time about how politicians are so out of touch when Obama (as a community volunteer) was more in touch with everyday Americans than any other national politician to come along in a LONG time.
His lack of a political pedigree, his demeanor, and his youth were huge upsides for him.
But I think Obama's BIGGEST upside (which helped him the most in getting elected) was the GWB Administration-- and I actually like GWB and I think he was sincere but he had wicked advisors.

Actually, I understand what you are saying, however I disagree with you. He did tap the anger with GWB with great effectiveness. However, he won a by a very small margin. There were no fewer than 3 states that he one by less than 2% of the vote. Had those three flipped for John McCain it is possible that he would have been the President.
Obama had a fantastic way of saying nothing when giving speeches (I know because I paid very close attention during the primaries and general elections). He was also given a major pass on the issues of Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, and others with a radical racist, anti-Christian, anti-American, socialist/communist agenda.
He is a supporter of infanticide (not ever mentioned by the media), late term abortions, etc. His record on the issue of abortion during his time in the Illinois legislature was nothing short of appalling. He voted against bills that would have allowed babies who had survived an attempted abortion to receive medical care and attention. It is a fact that such children in Illinois are placed in closets, back rooms, etc. and are left alone to cry themselves to death. This is what Obama has supported in the past.
Further, if there was a bill that
he felt was too sticky, he would not take a stand one way or another. Instead he would only vote 'present'.
All of these are legitimate issues that were never addressed during the campaign, because John McCain was gutless, and the media was behind him.
