My wife watched the shoe event last night on the internet feed.
I wonder how much the sandals of Jesus or Peter would fetch, and what would Jesus have to say about such 'offerings'? Now that one owns such a par of 'apostolic' shoes, what are they going to do with them? Put them on an alter, a pulpit, a glass case in the vestibule or a private office? What about a safe deposit box?
How much could a mere saint be charged for being allowed to rub one of the shoes and say a prayer over them? Might be better than a rosary! What were those shoes doing there in the first place?

Isn't that the truth.
I was thinking the same thing - the people in the New Testament times actually knew JESUS. When he was gone, did they auction off his belongings? Think how much money they could have made to get the new church off the ground.

Look, I don't buy the whole spur of the moment thing for my own personal reasons. That the person who spurred is a lavish spender is no secret either.
And I totally have room to swallow the 40 offerings but the wisdom to this brings legitimate questions. Why not have a private viewing and auction after service? Was this the time and place to have an impromptu memorabilia sale with the "unchurched" present?

I thought it was strange that the guy starting to take the offering mentioned something about those there that paid $1000 for their shoes - - -I think that was part of the "set-up" for what they were about to do.
