Yes, God's Word is forever settled but our understanding of it is not.
In
1 Corinthians 13 we are told that our knowledge and our prophetic gifting are partial or incomplete. The Word is compared to a mirror.
When we look into this mirror the image is not crystal clear.
We see more of an outline than a detailed image.
!
Cor 13:12 in the KJV says:
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am know
In the NLT it says:
Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me.completely.
In The Message it says:
We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!
In the NASB it says:
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.
The Amplified says:
For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection [of reality as in a riddle or enigma], but then [when perfection comes] we shall see in reality and face to face! Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood [by God].
Some times we smugly and arrogantly think we "know it all," that what we believe and preach lines up perfectly with the Word of God and anyone who has any other view is wrong, wrong, wrong.
One thing that I think we need to give up is the attitude that I'm right and everyone else is wrong.
