Okay, I'm being snarky today!!!!!! I would apologize, but you know how that goes - I just can't lie!
I think that the gyst of his speech is probably what it always was going to be. I guess time will tell, but I think that the religious right is going to make things harder on ourselves in trying to stop Obama if things are not thought through. I'm not sure what was hoped to be accomplished by all of this, but at the end of the day, you were not about to prevent the highest ranking public official from speaking to public schools. Whatever the goal was (if there was one) it will probably have greater impact on those who want to get our message into schools.

Re: Obama To Address America's Public Schools

Here's a part of his speech that I didn't like:

Quote:
I've talked a lot about your government's responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren't working, where students aren't getting the opportunities that they deserve.
No school choice, which was part of his campaign platform. Not working for me. I'll believe in fairness and liberty when and if he re-issues school vouchers to the Washington D.C. kids.

I'm not sure I agree with you on the religious right making it harder. The bottom line is that his past associations are catching up with him by way of some of his appointments and the Czar issue when some were not paying attention before the election. That's what I am hearing.

Cast a vote for him in second term, Stew. Si se puedo!
You did read that Bush asked this too, correct?

Certainly I did. Let's look at it in it's correct context:
Quote:

“Let me leave you with a simple message: Every time you walk through that classroom door, make it your mission to get a good education. Don’t do it just because your parents, or even the President, tells you. Do it for yourselves. Do it for your future. And while you’re at it, help a little brother or sister to learn, or maybe even Mom or Dad. Let me know how you’re doing. Write me a letter — and I’m serious about this one — write me a letter about ways you can help us achieve our goals. I think you know the address.”
The subject of the paragraph is about education. Bush is very clearly asking them to write how they can help the Administration reach their goals in education - context is everything.

Apparently, from all the backlash, people were unsure of Obama's meaning when he said to write about how they could help him. As Stew stated:
Quote:
If you are asking children to help the President of the United States, I think the pertinent issue becomes what did the President tell them he wanted to do with their help.
Bush was very clear what he wanted from the students, IMO.

Obama needed to clarify his wording. So, the bottom line is - people do not, largely, trust the man. It's apparent by his plummeting poll numbers.

I will also add that nobody accused President Bush of indoctrinating school children, nobody tried to get school districts to cancel broadcast of the speech, and nobody started mass movements to keep kids home from school that day solely to avoid hearing the president speak. People did not distrust the motives of Bush as they do Obama.

Re: Obama To Address America's Public Schools

There's been a lot of talk too that his message today doesn't line up with his actions as president.
