"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

And another thing, if I became a UPCI minister, yall better teach me other alternatives to television because for 30 years I've been watching that tv and have no clue what to do if I got rid of the TV for the sake of the doctrine.

Thats all I'm saying..........
Keep the beard - that's kewl.

Keep the TV - if you are viewing wholesome stuff. Personally I hate most of it.

When ya coming over?

Re: Would This Man be Welcome to Preach at Confere

I am a music director, staff minister, etc at a UPC church and I take my neatly trimmed, well cared for full beard and mustache onto the platform everyday. However I do know that there are plenty of pastors who would have a proble with it, and I cannot even begin to explain why Biblically. I know of some black preachers who basically were edged out because of their facial hair.

You have a black pastor, Mark, what does he teach about facial hair?

You don't have to shave it off just keep it trimmed and neat they have men on the platform and in the sunday school department with beards and mustches.

Either the whole statement is correct or its partially correct. When the poster said black and latino, you said YOU ARE CORRECT and then you went on to talk specifically about latin america as an example.

I am choosing to disagree with the statement as a whole. For blacks (nor latinos) it has nothing to do with being feminine (and this is coming from someone who just came back from MEXICO off the plane TODAY! There were a wide variety of shaven and un-shaven faces that I saw while I was down there this weekend).

Cindy, i was only telling what was told to me when i asked
WHY the pastor allowed the Black men to have facial hair
but not the whites. I didn't make sense to me either.

The pastor that I am talking about had a fulltime Asst. Pastor
who at the time was black and he told him that the facial
hair was cultural and that if the church was going to win
more blacks he needed to let that rule go. so he did for the
Blacks but didn't want it on the white men.

I know.,,,Crazy but that's what was

Critical of whom or what? I have just never heard of this before, that facial hair was somehow a part of the culture or manhood of black men. I am not saying it is or isn't, just that it is a new idea for me. I will ask one of my girlfriends and let ya know.

And there we have it. A real live bearded brother in ministry!
