There are couple of quandaries that come up when people don't show love to one another--even when speaking *hard* truths. First, those who are trying to appear loving feel pressured to not speak up at all in certain situations lest they be associated with those who aren't speaking the truth in love. Secondly, when you speak the same truth in love that another spoke in anger, you run the risk (again) of guilt by association.
My Dad drilled this into me: If you say you love God, but you don't love your brother, you're a liar. (I John)
If I have to err, I would prefer to err on the side of grace and love than on the side of causing offense or provoking someone to anger.

I agree with you and your Dad. I do struggle sometimes to say things carefully, because if I say what I really feel, it is not always kind or nice. Even if I am right, it doesn't mean I need to say it.

One of the greatest things I have learned in the process of getting older is that saying nothing is often the best solution. I like for my POV to be heard, but when I am quiet I often find that either someone else will have the same thoughts I was having (ergo, I shouldn't be so arrogant as to think I'm the only one with good ideas), OR when I listen for a little while longer I see that my opinions wouldn't have been all that helpful.
There is no way my 26 year old self would have believed what I just typed.

Re: Love Everybody
I grew up in a hard family.
I was raised in a hard-hearted church system.
I had to re-learn many things in my adult years that many of you learned when you were a child.
I'm still learning.
Isn't that supposed to be a life-long process?

Yes! How boring would it be if we were born knowing everything we need to know?

I think that this Bishop Cleatus has a way with words. I don't agree with his assessment about women moderators that I read in another thread, but other than that, I think his posts are both thoughtful and on point.
