Re: Visited a non UPC church
I find it easier to get along with people if I understand some of what they are about. It is interesting to learn what circumstances in their life made them the way they are today.

Ya, well, I know what makes him tick. He is so much like many ministers who have been a part of my life.
Used to bother me, but now, I realize for them it is just a game. There is always the hope though that one day some light might begin to shine in their proud hearts!

Re: Visited a non UPC church
If people just would not give any man the power to play that game, it would spare many of us a lot of grief so we do not get derailed from the narrow path to God and life.
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
( Psalms 118:8)

The fact is that many of these men left the organization (I can name many more of their spiritual heirs that have also left in more recent days). This contributed to the loosening of the standards.
The fact that there were churches such as Laurel, where worldiness was permitted actually proves nothing. Laurel was founded with strong holiness standards, but over the course of time pastors who were loose took it away from its roots. One of these men was elected as the District Secretary or Treasurer. It was tolerated in Mississippi simply because no one could do anything about it until the pastor left.

These good men held to the "high standard" you are referring to no doubt. However, I have a good friend who spent his entire life in southern CA. Raised in those churches, etc. He saw the human side of these men and their flaws. Not sin, but while they stood on mountain tops on these issues, they had inconsistencies in other things. I will give one ex. When one got old enough to turn the church over, the next pastor was put on salary so the elder could remain the 10% getter.

Leave personalities out of the discussion. We can stay on the subject without naming names, or bashing someone. This is a general warning.

Re: Visited a non UPC church
