I am suspect of this close relationship with the church and the state. Nothing has ever been the same since Constantine. We have merged our citizenships, instead of keeping them distinct: Firstly, a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven. Secondly, a citizen of this world -- in particular a citizen of America. Our patriotism and flag have become idols of worship shaded in colors of proud nationalism.
I'm sure my comments won't be popular. After all, the Christian church has drank the patriotic-colored Kool-Aid. We really believe that America is God's instrument for goodness. We've lost the idea of a trans-national, trans-cultural and transcendent Gospel that has nothing to do with earthly kingdoms.
Be a citizen. Vote. Have a political opinion. In the final analysis, I don't care what your opinion is. If you think abortion should be legal (government's role in it), or illegal. I believe it should be illegal. Neither of those positions are moral positions. They are legal ones. Neither condone the morality of an abortion, they define it according to one's philosophy of government. Hopefully, Christians would take advantage of their democratic voice and keep out ugly atrocities like abortion. But to divide people over political ideas concerning taxation, role of government and other civil matters, is beneath the child of God. We are called to be above that.
Travel the world. Meet brothers and sisters of all nations. Don't be afraid to wave the flag, but the encroachment of patriotism and nationalism in the church is a concern to me.

I didin't say Ted Kennedy was evil. I don't believe he was.
When the church/children of God cease to be reasonably involved in their self-governance, we get what we have now. I have personally been very involved in state politics for 20yrs. However, I have never asked, or expected the folks whom I pastor to be involved to the degree I am.
When the church ceases to declare what is right and wrong, which has nothing to do with partisan politics, the church is dead.

Declaring what is immoral or evil is NOT the same thing as targeting personalities from the pulpit. We should be good citizens, but we are first and foremost Christians. Part of being a good Christian is being a good citizen. From a biblical perspective, that means paying your taxes, obeying your authorities and should include loving your enemies.
Obviously the pastor in question on this thread is not being a good Christian OR a good citizen.

I don't think we should or need to target personalities or organizations from the pulpit and honestly I think visitors find it a huge turn off. If you want to lose visitors talk about how bad the church down the street is.

I didn't shed a tear when Teddy Kennedy passed and neither did I rejoice. I am glad his liberal influence is gone. We are to hate the evil and love the good. Forgive me if I misunderstood you. Maybe the last sentence was a separate thought.
When children of God cease we get what we have now? That makes the assumption that there are many Christians that agree with Obama's philosophy of the role of government. What is right or wrong is precisely what I addressed. That has little to do with taxation, social programs, little government or big government. Right or wrong are strictly issues of morality that concern the church first and foremost.

I think there's something of a gray area that MOW is referring to. Obviously our faith is to be practiced outside the church walls and in every arena of our lives, including the political world.
Abortion, for example, is a moral issue AND there are legal issues surrounding both the moral and the medical aspects of the issue. It is a complex matter to discuss and pastors should always be free to give moral guidance on any issue.
It's really the tacking and even incendiary stuff like that video that was posted at the start that cross the line.
