In 1968 there was a split at the UPC church. Bro. Leroy Buller became assistant pastor and Bro. and Sis. Paslay left with a group and established a second UPC church in the area. I've been to some of their services in a couple of their buildings. Bro. and Sis. Paslay got older, their health deteriorated and after they died, their son Norman became senior pastor. Actually he was the acting pastor for some time before their death. Then a few years ago that congregation built and moved to a new building about a mile or two from my house. Their previous church was also about that far from my house. I've only been there to the new place once and that was for my wife's cousin's funeral. Some of my wife's family still go there. I haven't seen Norman since another funeral for another cousin. He's always been friendly. If he inherited anything from his parents I'm sure he's a good man and a good preacher.

I guess this group wouldn't be especially fond of the song, "In Christ Alone..."
I only met Bro Scotty Teets a few times but I could tell he was a very intense and a very genuine preacher of the Gospel.

Josh,
Quite a few Spanish UPCI churches have this teaching even today ....
Brother Teets is definitely intense ....

They believed that those who used the term lacked revelation and were somehow unholy being that Jesus is his name. Christ was reference to his flesh .... They asserted that after the resurrection, and his subsequent glorification, he was no longer the Christ [flesh] .... the Christ died at Calvary.
They even formulated a well-thought out doctrine to support this belief. They sought to lift the name of Jesus Christ and shunned those that used "Christ" in their testimonies, songs, or preachings.
Dozens of songs containing Christ/Cristo were edited and the name Jesus replaced the blasphemous lyrics .... even if it disregarded rhyme or the author's intent
It was their new "revelation", and air of higher spirituality, that brought huge division and problems to the Spanish work especially here in the Houston area.
Ironically, some of these ministers leading "the revelation" were dealing with other immoral issues.
Even today, this teaching is pervasive in many Spanish speaking churches, especially here in the South.
I also recall Bishop Scotty Teets stating that this teaching was formulated many years ago by an American pastor ... does anyone know anything about the genesis of this teaching ?

Back in 1966 I heard W.T. Hemphill (Joel Hemphill's father) preach a fellowship meeting in North Louisana and he came down HARD on "using God's titles and not using the name of Jesus".
He evermore gave the title "Christ" a slamming.

Perhaps Elder Epley has encountered that teaching.

I think they are "The General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn". There is one in Lexington and one in Hohenwald, and I don't know where else. My daughter graduated under their homeschool umbrella covering, so we had some connections with them. They had some very strange doctrines; didn't believe in a rapture, etc.

How does one slam the title of "Christ"????
Didn't this Hemphill fella have some other strange teachings ..... ???
I've noticed that those that fall into these "revelation" teachings want to make themselves more spiritual than the rest of us .....

It was an issue in my dad's church. One of the prominent teachers of this doctrine came to preach for us and spoke on this belief. My Dad had a fit..that was the last time he preached for us.
This was the main reason my Dad was brought onto the Spanish Committee in 1995. They brought him on the committee to be the "Colombian bulldog" and confront the backers of this doctrine,
