Anyways, Ron wanted to remind you NOT to touch the mother board or the ram chips unless you are grounded. Touch the case to discharge any static electricity
Thanks, I remembered that.
I ran that malware program & it came up with about 49 Registry Keys infected.

Thanks for this Prax, after 4 scans my computer is clean & running better!
I still think I ought to look into replacing my hard drive.

Re: Anyone Ever Replace A Hard Drive?

Since it's an ATA, my guess is that it may be a an older drive anyhow. There's almost never anything wrong with a new upgrade.

That is, if you've got the time to reload everything. I'd recommend giving everything a clean new load - but then again, I do suffer from OCD as well. If you don't share that affliction, then just clone the old drive with Acronis and copy that clone directly to the new drive; once you're certain everything is clean.

Oh... one trick for cleaning in case the pros RW and Prax didn't mention it: Turn OFF System Restore and then run another scan. Then, remember to turn it back on. A lot of trojans and such embed themselves in old System Restore files and many Virus scanner don't have access to even scan those files. By turning it off you will loose your old restore points, but you're starting out fresh anyway, so no big loss.

This is very true BUT the reason I didn't mention it, or forgot to, is because I automatically turn System Restore off anyways so it is never an issue. I do not like the small hit on system performace it makes and the couple of times I ever actually tried to use it, the "restored" machine was, to borrow a phrase from C3PO, "not entirely stable".

Still, crack the case and clean out the dust and check the fans to see if they are making the noise

Re: Anyone Ever Replace A Hard Drive?

Wellll, I am going out today to purchase a new Hard Drive & browsing online I see 1 Terabyte drive for under $100 at a computer store two blocks from my house.

Maybe this was a blessing in disguise?

Should I install my old XP or get Winders 7 32 bit?

Re: Anyone Ever Replace A Hard Drive?

How much memory do you have and what type of processor? 32 or 64 bit?

OK, after looking at it I would recommend you stick with XP. For one thing it is free since the box came with it, where you would have to pay for Windows 7. But it only has 512 megs (unless you upgraded since you bought it -and would recommend you do that regardless, to at least 1 gig).
