I am checking in from youth convention where the predominent theme has been "holiness". You would not EVEN believe some of the junk that has come over the pulpit here.
Last night the speaker told the teens they need to go to bible college. He stated that parents should push them to this, and that if parents choose secular college over bc they are wrong. He also stated that kids and parents should be proud if the highest level of education they receive is a GED.
I was a little bit more than upset.
Oh, we've also had a preacher call Anna Nicole a whore from the pulpit.
I'm so thankful for the in depth teaching they have been receiving.
It's not the first time we've heard this king of preaching or emphasis at a youth convention or even at campmeeting and conferences.
Has there not been any orther speakers or messages or points made during the whole series of meetings to counter-balance the emphasis you mention here? If not, maybe there will be yet.

how do you counter balance "stupid"?
do you let stupid speak then counter with smart and call that balanced? I dont.
I really am pretty upset about this.

It is situations like this that make me think a split in the UPC would be the best thing that ever happened.
It is hard to have unity with this kind of thought not only in the org. but it being promoted within by having it preached at youth meetings and other meetings.
That's why we no longer attend camps or conferences. The UPC has become it's own worst enemy because of the cult of personality that exists. It's like the "American Idol" of preaching (excuse the reference). The goal always seems to be to whip the crowd into a frenzy and see how outrageous you can get. One problem is that certain "big name" preachers get away with this same stuff and everybody laughs it off as "just their personality." So what do you expect?

I can deal with the other stuff, but to call Anna Nicole Smith a "ho"!
She may be a skank, but she ain't no "Ho"!

Uh.....I think she was but never the less that should not be something coming over the pulpit.
Some people think preaching it "straight" or "hard" is an excuse for being crude and tactless. You can call sin sin without those kinds of personal attacks.

I am ALL for calling sin sin. I think it should be done. However, the moment you attack the sinner personally...I don't think that is appropriate...ever.

It really depends on the context. I heard a sermon about Gomer and Hosea in which Gomer was referred to, tongue-in-cheek as a "two-bit-ho", and it was funny, not offensive. However, most speakers can't pull those kinds of things off without offense, and really ought to avoid the obnoxious.
Jeff Arnold and a couple of others are the only ones who can really get away with that kind of language, and quite honestly, I doubt if JA would ever use that towards a sinner...he'd be more likely to direct it at a hypocritical saint!!!!
