Gen 1:3 And God said, Let there be light. And there was light.
Gen 1:4 And God saw the light that it was good. And God divided between the light and the darkness.
Gen 1:5 And God called the light, Day. And He called the darkness, Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
According to a literalist reading one has to conclude the earth was already created before the first day

It does appear that there was some period of time involved that the writer was intending us to see between "... God created the heavens and the earth..." and "... God said, Let there be light..."
I'm not talking about "gap theory" (though others may) and I don't see a one-to-one correlation between "days" and "ages" (of the earth) to give us a "Day/Age Theory" either.
It was poetic metaphor. The words are aligned in "mathematical couplets" whereby the sum of the number of word equates to a "divine" principle that the writer was trying to (and did) convey.

2)I edited my post before you quoted me. What in the passage demands seperating Genesis 1:1-2 from 1:3? It seems very much to be one account. What hermenutic do we use to divorce verse 1-2 from 3? Only scientific influence, not sound hermenutics.

Separation?
Where do you see in the text God creating the earth? It already exists. There is no "God set, let there be an earth"
God instead spends the "creation" account terra forming. Also what do "heavens" refer to? Did God already create the sky and the galaxy before forming the stars and sun and moon?

What hapens before the end of verse 5 according to the bible you want to dismiss is wrtten about as the first day. What does your religion teach?

But you have no regard for the measure of time ... we call day, Coadie ... you readily admit that the day in Genesis is not measured by 24 hours ... so we don't know how long the interim is .... or earth rotating on its axle to face light (morning) and darkness (night)...
could it be 20 seconds (our measure) ? 20 years? 200 million?
Even Zerubbabel knows that ...

Again Coadie introduces more red herring obfuscations and misspellings...Coadie are you admitting yes or no that the earth was already existing before the first day? Very simple question

You go on to answer your own question.

Personally, I feel that "one is obligated" to admit that God created everything in the first place.

Genesis 1
1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
we see God creating the earth in verse 1.
It is right there in the bible.
You should spend more time reading it than trying to rip it appart.

Exactly. The earth and heavens already existed before the 6 day creation. Thanks Coco

I am really, really wanting to see you back up these last two assertions. Find me "dodging" the question. Find an example of Haeckel being used "to this day."

I know I have seen that used in modern textbooks on slides in videos. I graduted HS fairly recently (1999) and I seem to remember that being in my Texas biology textbook, though I'm not 100% certain. I could probably find it, but I'm not going to go looking right now. I've been on AFF for 2 hours tonight, I want to try to catch up on this thread, and get off the computer. I try to watch the time I spend on the computer, and when a converrsation like this is happening, sometimes I get sucked in.

I don't see it Prax. All I see is in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. That seems to be saying the creation of the earth is the beginning of the creation week.
