Re: I Love the UPCI

I love my good friend, Ferd, but I have to say I disagree with him.

There are some hurts that last a lifetime. There are some scars that are impossible to hide.

Re: I Love the UPCI

I can't say that I "love" the UPC or any other religious organization. I am fond of it. I did not leave the UPC over mistreatment (although we had a little of that) or in a huff. It was an honest difference in perspective that caused me 27 years ago, as my wife and I were starting out in life, to move to a new city and start attending an exUPC church.

I have many fond memories of growing up in a small UPC church as a child, being part of other UPC churches as I grew older, and graduating from a UPC Bible College. However it was clear by the time that I graduated from Bible College that I was not in sync with traditional UPC emphasis on extra biblical legalism and saw it as something that was an unneccesary impediment to people coming to Christ.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."
