Stop beating around the bush and come out with what you are getting at.

Do you mean should a preacher have "an advantage" over a non preacher?

First of all explain what you mean by "an advantage".

Sure. Some are more respectable than others.

Not necessarily, but a respected member may end up with de facto "power," or freedoms, that a pathetic whiner doesn't get.

No. But perceiving any and every sleight or disagreement as an insult is likely to diminish the amount of respect a person receives.

It's been said before, but the TRUTH is never out of style: Respect is earned.

Its not biblical.

In fact, the exact opposite is biblical.

ALL men and women deserve respect. Christian or non-christian. They don't have to earn it.

You don't have to respect their actions, their opinions, their ideas, etc. but you DO have to respect them as fellow human beings created in the image and likeness of God, same as YOU!

You can't love someone you don't respect and Jesus said we are to love everyone.

I think others have qualified what is meant by respect is earned, Lady Rev .... everyone gets a basic level of respect ... but ... even in your own life some people earn and accrue more respect points ... sorry ...it's just reality.

reading your post I felt a confident agreement in my spirit.

I also had a thought....
the scripture you alluded to was likely:
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

could it be that our lack of love one to another is because we do NOT feel loved by our Lord?

Thats a respect based on ACTIONS. I don't think Coop was referring to that but rather respect for persons in general which sometimes is lacking on this forum especially when it comes to "unknowns and newbies".

I don't think this sentence is accurate. Yes you can love someone that you don't respect. Jesus love is a love that goes beyond being earned. He loves us when we are disrespectful to Him by living a sinful life. I know a few people that I don't respect or trust that much, yet I love them enough to pray for them and to be committed to seeing them saved. The kind of Love Jesus expects us to show is the Corinthians Love Chapter kind of love. Love that turns the other cheek, love that humbles us, love that makes us act as a servant.

You can be act and respond respectfully to those that have not earned respect by their own deeds and words.
