To Ollie North? Yes! And NO coincidence, IMO!

Re: Chairman Issa: Lerner waved 5th Amend Right!

It took a couple weeks, but Issa's committee is moving forward with contempt charges against Lois Lerner.

The IRS scandal is far from over....

An IRS official effectively waived her right not to testify about the tax agency's targeting of conservative groups, a Republican-led congressional committee concluded on Friday in a vote that cleared the way for Congress to hold her in contempt.
Quote:
The Oversight and Government Reform Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives approved on a party-line vote a Republican resolution on Friday saying that Lerner did waive her Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination.
Quote:
"That is the not the way the Fifth Amendment works. You don't get to tell your side of the story," and then avoid cross examination, said Republican Trey Gowdy. "She sat there and could have said nothing."
Quote:
The vote could clear the way for Republicans to haul Lerner back before the committee, where she would likely again invoke her Fifth Amendment rights. That would likely lead to a vote to hold her in contempt of Congress, Republican aides said.
Quote:
A contempt of Congress vote could lead to her being prosecuted in a court and subject her to a maximum $1,000 fine and potential 12-month prison sentence. Lerner is now on administrative leave and has been replaced in her post.

Re: Chairman Issa: Lerner waved 5th Amend Right!

Remember Lois Lerner? She's the lady at the IRS who came before a Senate committee proclaiming her innocence, stating that she had not done anything wrong or illegal. Then she pleaded the 5th, refused to testify and walked out.

Directly after this, the committee debated whether she had waived her 5th amendment right by making her statement, then pleading the 5th. They determined she waived her 5th amend right by giving the lengthy statement beforehand, and demanded she return for questioning.

At first, her attorneys said no, no! She didn't waive her right.

Well they've somewhat changed their tune. They've agreed that she would testify asap....on one condition:

Full immunity from prosecution.

Wait, what happened to the whole, "I didn't do anything wrong or illegal" stuff she claimed in her statement to the committee? Why would she demand immunity before testifying.

I really, really hope the committee doesn't fold and grant her immunity. Her prior history and record of targeting conservatives and Christians needs to be stopped, and the only way it can be done is by holding her fully accountable if she did indeed break any law, committed perjury or did some illegal in her position at the IRS.

But politics will reign. In the end, the committee will give her limited immunity in exchange for her testimony; because they're more interested in how much higher up the ladder this went than prosecuting her.
