Hate to break bubbles, but like every calendar, the mayan long count calender doesn't actually end dec 21 0r 23) whichever, it recycles, starts over, just like ours does every year.

It is a calender, a tool for marking the passage of time. That's it... no mystery.

I hope the story is as good as the effects in this film.
Seeing the USS Kennedy tossed over like a little toy boat was intense. I know how big modern carriers are.

Good point Brother Blume; however, there seems to be more than just the Mayans pointing to 2012. To be fair, I am hardly convinced, but there also seems to be some "scientific" evedence of polar shifts and other events that could be real.

Polar Shift is possible, not likely. If you would like to focus on a disaster that is a very real sword of Damocles hanging over the USA think EMP (electro magnetic pulse) attack

The earth won't shake, the sea won't rage, everything will simply stop. Our cars, if made after 1980 will just die and roll to a stop. Cell phone will die, ipods, radios, computers...everything electroc will quit working, never to work again.

Airplanes will drop out of the sky, the communication systems, even government and military command and control systems aren't sufficiently hardened to survive an EMP.

We might get to see how far up the creek we are when dies the fire of our civilization. Potential for the loss of 60-80% of the North American population in the first year.

So maybe on Dec 21 2012 North Korea or Iran will detonate a nuke a couple of hundred miles above Ohio...boom boom. Out go the lights.

Real scientists and military strategest's HAVE pointed this out to the government, but the dems are so busy beating the global warming drum that these guys are drowned out and ignored.

The scales of that "serpent" was (is) the stars of the Milky Way. The world encircling serpent known as Ouroboros to the Greeks was seen as the symbol of the cosmic life/death cycle that went on continually. A serpent that continually ate its own tail and regenerated itself as it went through the cycle.

The galactic disk of the Milky Way seems to be a "serpent" encircling the globe. The central bulge of the galaxy - in the constellation Sagitarius is seen as the "head" of the serpent. Thus, when the winter solstice lines up with Sagitarius, the "serpent" is said to "swallow" the earth. The Vikings called this Ragnarok.

The serpent was seen as a symbol of death and renewal due to its skin-shedding nature. Moses was said to have fashioned brass serpents on a pole that were a symbol of healing and hope. Jesus Christ compared Himself to this symbol.

The Bible echoes much of the symbolism of the ancient world. As far as the significance of December 21, 2012, - it's another date in a seemingly endless cycle of life, death and renewal. "Endless" in the sense that from the scale of a single human life span we seem rather insignificant.

I read that out of the American Legion Magazine. A well place nuclear warhead explosion over the midwest would just about do it.

Wasn't this one of the main plot points from A View to a Kill (which just happened to be on last night)?

None of us knows when God is going to do his stuff, and almost every generation has thought that thier generation was the last. Do you guys give any credence to the Mayan calander? How about the I-ching from the Chinese? It would seem that the whole world has a prediction of 2012, is this a coincedence or is there something to it? Just curious what you guys think. God's blessings be upon you!
ridiculous......I heard a guy at work all over it, he said Jack Van Impe is really promoting it. This is why futurists (which I am) lose credibility with preterists (and rightly so with this kind of junk).

(There EB, TK, AFP1996, I threw you a bone, run with it.)

He is a real joke. He had to create new rapture dates everytime it didnt happen when he said it would. He and Lindsey keep putting out books and put out new ones when their prophesies do not come to pass. And silly people just keep buying their books...it look like they would learn after all the false prophey that Van Impe does not know what he is talking about! Period.
