We looked into solar panels for the house we had built a couple years ago. Didn't seem cost effective, but now we're kinda wishing we'd gone ahead with it. It would take a long time to pay for itself, but if rates go sky high down the road, that's another story. I think there are tax incentives to help with the cost, too.

Could I live without electricity at all? No solar, no nothin'? Dunno. I'll give it a try and post progress reports. Oh. Wait. Never mind!

Yes, I can and have butchered dear. And yes, if I had to and were capable (ie had a tool to do it), I'd kill and eat squirrel, rabbit, turkey, turtle (don't know how to kill that one), locusts... if we were hungry enough, we might all be surprised what we would eat! Fish would actually be my first choice though.

LOL! Here's how you kill a turtle, at least this is how my Dad did it when I was little. You hold it by the tail andshoot it in the head and hang it upside down. These were snappers and they were fairly large.

You could always walk down to the local library.

I'd like to live off the grid, at least for a while. Would it be hard? It could be. Would it be impossible? No. Some people live off the grid very productively and enjoy it. It takes some planning though.

Dumb question: What if they hide their head in the shell?? Knock and say, "anybody home???"

Re: If you no Electricity could you live?

Esther, I purchased the wind up lights from amazon.com -- Flashlights that require batteries wouldn't be reliable for long term power outages. Impossible to buy enough batteries to last indefinitely. The lights that I purchased also have an adapter for a cell phone-- (not that I think we'd be able to use cell phones in the event of a major long term power outage)

Just a sample from my survival supply list:

I purchased an old washtub for $5 from the estate of a neighbor who recently passed away. That would take care of laundry washing. I have clotheslines that I use on sunny days anyway. I do need a better way of wringing out the laundry if I had to resort to hand washing though.

Cooking/lighting was covered in the post above.

For drinking/cooking water-- rinse 2 liter soda bottles well and fill them with water. Add a couple of drops of bleach to each bottle. Do not recycle milk jugs to store water, because they break down over time and will leak or allow water to become contaminated.

We have a portable propane heater as a backup source of heat.

Extra quilts & sleeping bags for colder weather.

Good sturdy shoes for every member of the family. Imagine having to hike for a while to hunt animals for meat. Definitely want supportive shoes.

Plenty of emergency medical supplies. Extra OTC meds and prescriptions. Lots of herbal products that would replace Prescriptions when they run out. Suture kits, butterfly bandages, peroxide, alcohol, alcohol wipes, Even a couple of emergency dental filling kits.

Antibacterial hand sanitizer.

Several tubs of baby wipes.

A couple of boxes of medical gloves.

Plenty of non-perishable food items -- Oatmeal, beans, rice, evaporated milk or shelf stable milk, canned meats, trail mix, cheese crackers, peanut butter, spices to season beans & rice, presweetened koolaid or instant tea mix-- you'll get tired of water, comfort foods... I chose chocolate chips because they can be used more than one way. A few of those tossed into homemade muffin mix and baked in a makeshift solar oven would definitely be comforting... my food list is much longer than this, but you get the idea. Do NOT keep your emergency food stock with other foods... store it in safe place known only to your immediate family. If times get really bad, people will go to great lengths for food....

Also... prepare an emergency kit for your cars. Change of clothing and shoes for each person in your house, basic medical supplies, -- food and water supply for at least three days. (trail mix, granola bars, a few things that require no cooking-- just open it and eat) You never know when something might happen that you may be stranded away from home and need those things.

I'm not a fanatic-- I just like to be prepared. I live in Tornado country.... so far, we've been very blessed and not needed any of the preparations that I keep on hand. I pray that continues to be the case.

Maybe the thing was trying to bite him while he shot it? I'm not quite sure. I just know that he would hang it upside down to drain the blood and that it had a bullet hole in the head. Nasty. Bleah.

Yep.... as they catch on more and more the prices go down and the stated and federal incentives are getting heftier as well.

One can eat just about anything if need be... we have an annual "Testicle Festival" in our area. LOL!

Funny this year it was 6/6/09 - on our anniversary!
