Yes, I understand the respect level and all that.

But I'm not sure how much value an endorsement would (or even should) have at this point.

If an "undecided" voter decides to go for Obama because of Powell's endorsement, that's a voter who unfortunately is probably not that informed of the issues at this point... which is kinda sad. The differences between Obama and McCain are so stark and distinct, that it shouldn't take an endorsement by another person for someone to finally decide who to case their vote for.

Then again, I never understood by endorsements were considered important anyway. If I like who I like, I don't need some celebrity or politician telling me who THEY like, as if my choice is supposed to be influenced by what they think.

I understand your point, but I have to point out that Colinb Powell is not your average celebrity endorsement. We're not talking about an endorsement from someone's whose only qualifications are wavy hair and a perfect set of Hollywood teeth.
I'm not saying that Powell is going to endorse Obama, I do not know that, but I would say that an endorsement from someone like him would carry weight with a lot of people...particularly if the nature of the endorsement stems from him feeling that the rationale behind the war and our entire foreign policy positions have been flawed. Once again I do not know if he is enforsing Obama, but his endorsement would speak volumes and be very relevant. In a time when foreign issues and military issuea are at the forefront of most people's minds, I would put his political endorsement on par with a Kissinger type endorsement, except that it would be more relevant to today's situations.

I agree with your points on why this endorsement might matter. There are very few people that carry the credability that Colin Powell does with both parties. Powell has always stayed above the fray of politics to a great degree.

Again, it's the who Colin Powell could effect. White males over 50 is the key demographic that's never been sold on Obama. That same demographic is well aquainted with Colin Powell and respects his knowledge and expertise on foreign policy issues(aka Obama's weakest spot).

From all reports tonight, this is going to happen Sunday and it'll be interesting to watch.

It would be sufficient for Colin Powell to go on the record as NOT supporting Sen. McCain if he felt the need to enter his opinion. But I honestly think that if publicly endorses Sen. Obama, it's Mr. Powell who could stand to lose out in the future.

Besides, waiting till 3 weeks before the elections to endorse Obama when he's now the consensus front-runner is not exactly a politically risky or courageous move for Powell.

.
Not only that, as far as we know he has always voted Democratic, anyway he was corrupted over at the State Dept.

Re: Colin Powell will be on Meet the Press Sunday

Whoa Nellie!!

Gen. Colin Powell announced in 1995 that he was registered as a Republican and has held his most strategic positions of influence and power in Republican Administrations.

If there is anyone in the Washington crowd who is not corrupt, it would be Colin Powell.

Which all the more reason for him to NOT tarnish his reputation by endorsing any one candidate.

If he does endorse Sen. Obama and Sen. Obama does win, you can expect to see Gen. Colin Powell again in a place of influence and power, but this time in a Democrat Administration.

Which would not shock me-- Sen. Obama has been painted as this far left guy, but in reality, he's not that far left of a guy.

I'm sure Mr Obama is hoping a lot of people vote like this, Mike.

Might as well cast a vote for Obama.

I've always had respect and confidence in Colin Powell, and I'll be very disappointed if he supports the likes of Obama.

I think it's a legitimate observation to make, Mike. Let's kid ourselves here.

For someone who insists he's not supporting either of these 2 candidates, you don't exactly come across as "fair and balanced" here. If you don't have a preference for either one, it just seems odd that you would spend a disproportionate amount of time bashing McCain on this forum moreso than Obama.
