LOL! come on, why do you care about scoring points on the dead guy? What is the end game? what do you get out of it?
I wasn't trying to score any points. He said something stupid about the black race and so I printed that. He could have learned a little more from Harriet Beecher Stowe and her family.
being a former history major, i do care about history.
the point here is you have a website out there trying to be an influence in American politics.
they have as a bullet point on their resume " we think Abraham Lincoln was the devil"
RD and PO, do either of you think this is the way to go about winning friends and influencing people? because from all I know about politics, that just dont seem like the way to go about your business.
here are the pionts of interest to me personally.
I agree with these folk in principle on a number of issues. On issues that i find important, I tend to want to win at the ballot box. winning at the ballot box becomes important. I dont want people who I agree with, doing things that will cause my side to loose.
Getting linked to the "Kooks that think Abraham Lincoln was the devil" doesnt help you win at the ballot box.
Guys, AL was responsible for more American deaths than any other person in history. He did not think black people were genetically equal to white people. (this would be the definition of a racist).
He is the only president to suspend (or come close to) suspending the constitution.
He in fact was known for not following up on promises.
He fired God only knows how many generals until he came up on a guy that would throw his own men away like so much trash....but won because he didnt mind playing a numbers game.
Would you like for me to go on? i could. I could also run down a few things he did well....
but. If I want to score political points, and get people to vote for my guy, I am NOT leading with "Abraham Lincoln didnt like Jesus"
I believe the site in question was responding to a comment made by Pat Buchanan. Sites like this sing basically to the choir. They are obviously doing some things for 'shock value' for the few outsiders that may visit.

and my point would be.....who cares, he is dead.
more importantly, I care because i want my team to be taken seriously. taking pot shots at dead bodies is bad form. you dont get taken seriously when you do that....
but you must care because you pointed it out. what I dont understand is why pointing it out is important?
and remember, the choice was between Abe, who didnt want black people to vote and Douglas who wanted to keep black people in slavery.
context is king.

I think the do the shock value thing to keep the "choir" in line. but I see you arent taking issue with my point....

I care because they set a precedent that we are paying for today!
How in the name of all that is good and holy can a "white" Christian look at a human being and say such garbage.
The Beecher Stowes went south and set up learning facilities, in the midst of persecution, to teach the poor black people how to read and assimilate in society.
How stupid that someone could read for his law degree OUT OF THE BIBLE and feel that way about flesh and blood that God made.
I cannot for the life of me fathom that. I can't reconcile my mind to it.
Have we any excuse to act like that was nothing after you read the book of Philemon? I say we don't.
We can call people "trash" and rightly so if they just won't try. The black people wanted a chance and "white" people saw no value.
While in the Illinois legislature Lincoln never challenged the anti-black legislation in that state. He voted against black suffrage and refused to sign a petition allowing black testimony in court. He was also a strong supporter of colonizing free blacks, convinced that they could never assimilate in American society. As president he urged the State Department to look into possible areas of settlement in such places as Haiti, Honduras, Liberia, Ecuador and the Amazon.

Today, we are still paying for that.
Today, a great many blacks refuse to assimilate into American society.
As for the article linked in the original post, Hillary's just prostituting herself for votes.

You are right on both accounts Chancellor. As to the first point, it doesn't take away how "white" people in history handled themselves. We are paying for that today.
Think how things might have been if we looked at it like the Beecher Stowes. That is all I'm saying.

wonderful. you have a nice grasp of history. you also have a clear conscience. that is very nice. Now remind me of this precedent that AL set?
PO, in the world we live in, AL freed the slaves. no one thinks he was a modern day saint. I guess I am left wondering why you want to judge this man by todays standards when clearly on the subject of slavery he was a proressive for his era.
Thomas Jeffereson, refused to put the word "free" in the declaration of indepenance because he did not want to exclude black slaves from the idea that "all men are created equal" but he owned slaves. do we judge him by the standards of modernity? of course not.
you cannot take a man out of his era and judge him by a set of values that he has had no exposure to!
What ever AL was, both the good and the bad, has to be judged by the era in which he lived.
You said today that you might vote for Rudy G. you said your reasoning was because you were voting for President not for priest.
so excuse me if I am baffeled by this commitment to making sure everyone knows just how evil the 147year dead guy was.
