I received a couple of angry PM's on the GNC, but I wouldn't call them "hate mail." I had a guy on the AFF PM me once and tell me that I seem like a ***ch. However, I responded reasonably and we ironed things out alright.
I don't really call that hate mail either. "Hate mail" would have to be where someone clearly states that they can't stand me, and they wish ill for me. Someone disagreeing with me or even being mad at me isn't "hate."
Plus, I usually state what I really think right on the forum, and don't mind others doing the same--even if it hurts. So I imagine folks say what they think about me right out in the open. No need to PM it anonymously.

That's what I was wondering.
You seem to be reasonable about the whole thing. I think some consider anything negative towards them as "hate".
Although... if someone called me what that person called you in pm... I'd probably have a problem with it lol.
BTW... you DO NOT seem like you would be that pleasant expletive at all.

The emails/pms I consider to be hate mail type of things were far, far, far beyond what Miss Brat described. They were, in no uncertain terms, making it very clear the writer didn't like me or what I stood for, especially because of what I was standing for. I've never been threatened, but I do know people who have been.
To be honest, I've gotten emails etc where I've been quite aware the writer didn't like me, and didn't consider those hate mail. There are some people out there though, thankfully a very few, who can be extremely hateful.
Ok, put it this way.
"I don't like you." Not hate.
"I hate you." Still not hate.
"I hate everything you stand for." Still not hate.
"Your entire family should die and rot in hades because your choices are horrible and they offend me deeply." Maybe moving into hate, I'd consider this hate mail coming from a total stranger, and maybe from someone I know (I'm talking online acquaintance type of 'know') depending on what sort of exchanges there had been in the past.
And I've gotten things that go beyond this.

I wouldn't want to be in public office. People get very riled over religion, politics and money.

Yes. I've received hateful email and PMs from people that didn't agree with me. Primarily about politics. But the worst was when a few men from my church found some posts that I wrote under my real name. They decided to corner me and threaten me after church one day. One even physically threatened me for questioning President Bush's judgment on Iraq. I've been called Communist, Red, Commie, Baby Killer, and worse by those who can't stand that I disagree with the Republican Party. It's almost like a psychosis.
This has proven to me that much of the church today is primarily a right wing think tank hiding under the guise of religion to intimidate and brainwash people into political conservatism. It has also shown me that there is no tolerance for different political opinions in the church. If you're not Republican....don't bother going to church. They will hate you. And when someone asks me about my church I do warn them about this.
I responded by choosing a new screen name instead of using my real name. Now nobody I know can corner me and verbally berate me for having a different opinion and the only negative messages are from people that I'm currently debating at the time.

One of my emails was forwarded to a young man that I do not know. He goes to a nearby UPC. He emailed me and asked me if I was trinity (he used the term like it was a dirty word).
During all the anti Harry Potter frenzy, I distributed an email from someone expressing their opinion that they did not consider the Harry Potter publications evil. I passed this on with an opening paragraph that I was passing it along to show another side of the argument. I got an email from someone who had moved out of state berating me for writing stuff like that and especially someone of my "influence." I don't know how influential he thought I was and it wasn't even my writing --just something I passed along.
But I have never received anything that I would consider "hate mail."
