I have a friend that shot a stray cat that his young daughter had, of course, grown fond of.
He told her it died from lead poisoning. 
By the way... Food for thought...
A dog is truly a man's best friend.
If you don't believe it, just try this experiment.
Put your dog and your wife in the trunk of the car for an hour.
When you open the trunk, who is really happy to see you?!

You are right about the dog except he's more happy to see me!
My husband is not happy with me about my dog, yet. I told him yesterday, "See, he loves you already." He said, "Yea, that's the sad part about it."
