Typical response. Standards are not a heaven and hell issue.

Re: Standards
I choose not to place my focus on simply is it heaven or hell, but is it expedient for me as a Christian.

i really like KBTWs reflection there; nothing wrong with personal standards, obviously--but corporate standards may actually indicate a problem, prolly come from fear, and are a "human good" attempt to resolve what a human considers problematic, where God may not. I'd like to hear arguments or examples to the contrary.

Thats fine. But when some pastor tries to make it a heaven or hell issue for the whole body, then thats where I have a problem. Especially with extra biblical standards. The whole standard culture is such a load of bunk.

Has revival EVER prevailed without a high degree of separation from the world and it's ideas of what's okay? EVERY major revival resulted in high "standards".
What's funny is the world tends to recognize holiness more clearly than a lot of professing Christians.

I don't think Azusa resulted in high standards-- at least not in the way I think of standards as extra-biblical, man-made, garbage that the Apostle Paul said showed self-sacrifice but was worthless.

They were wesleyan holiness people. The UPC would be considered practically apostate by their standards.

I don't make it a heaven or hell issue, although I wonder. We have standards for the ministry of our church. If a person wants to be in a public leadership role then they would have to comply. As for whether they go to heaven or hell, that is between them and God.

I don't think this is the way Jesus would refer to people's convictions.

Re: Standards
amen--but people's convictions are not standards, as we understand the term. i am more convicted by the day that Standards are simply Laws, in the age of Grace. All they can possibly do is divide on the one hand, and insulate the standards adherent from God on the other. Any standard you could name displays this. Pick one.
