Re: UPC Culture
This has been so enjoyable. I remember most of the oddities listed. I also thought the birthday doings were unique to our local church.
We were so proud to put our pennies for our age in the "bank", we had a round metal birthday cake with a hole in the middle to drop in our pennies.
Yes to the song, the pennies, the pencil....
And the perfect attendance pin with hang ons for further years. You got a pin first;next perfect SS attendance was a wreath around the pin, and then bars to hang from it for additional years.
I recall most of the expressions.
If a hymn had several verses you never sang all 4 or 5.
I'm "older" so we went to youth rallies or fellowship meetings in a station wagon with 3 rows of seats. It was a 57 chevrolet station wagon and the pastor had a 57 chev sedan. (just think....we had a classic ).

After service one night, all of us young people decided that instead of our nightly trip to McDonald's, we wanted to cool off. One of the new girls had a nice built in pool in their backyard. Her parents had gone with the other adults to Bob Evans. So................
The only problem was that, because we weren't allowed to Mixed Bath, we didn't have swimming suits to wear. And heaven knows it would have been baaaaaadddd if we had gotten our clothes wet swimming and then had to explain that to the adults afterwards.
So what else could we do? We took our clothes off and went skinny dipping!
We didn't turn any lights on, so it was all pretty innocent.
A couple weeks later, one of the girls got a case of "the guilts" and went to the pastor and confessed. Imagine that the stink that that stirred up!!
Oh the joys of being an Apostolic youth! LOL!!

After the last night of Chorale tour from JCM in 1976, about 20 of us went to the Drake motel in Jackson, MS and jumped in the pool in our choir outfits - with the hairdos and all. It was so much fun, and of course the dresses AND suits were all double knit, so they weren't even ruined. But we would have been in SO much trouble if the college admin had found out.
At least we weren't skinny dipping!!! LOL But I wonder what the other guests thought if they looked out the window and saw all of us in our red, white & blue bicentennial outfits swimming in their pool.

I have been gone for a while until yesterday so I am just now reading this thread and thought with all the posts it would be a good one to read all the way thru. I saw this and you are correct. We invited a group of visitors to our church the other day... and 4 of them... their first comment was... Wow I really do need to go to church I need to go thru a prayer line. We dont normally do them but I told them they were more than welcome to go up for prayer LOL
Some of these terms are new to me and I was raised in a very large UPC church and visited many. Guess Texas just does stuff different or yall are very weird one LOL

My mother taught me, and she truly believed it, that if I french kissed a girl before I was married, I was going straight to hell! No joke!
