Some times a local church is considered a family business and the idea is to keep the money in the family.

I know a church here like that. The future pastor is the pastor's son-in-law.

They do it for a few reasons . . .

1) to ensure they continue to receive offerings from the church
2) to make sure they keep their legacy
3) mo money, mo money
4) control

Why would you say that?

I had a great great uncle who had 7 children. He WAS'NT APOSTOLIC, but hard shell Baptist. He owned a lot of land. He gave each child a portion of land, his house sat right in the middle and his children lived all around him. He said"I can go out on the porch and holler and have all my kids and gran kids here in a minute"

Just seems weird . . .

I understand it may have been common back in the day. But it makes me think of Waco, Fred Phelps and other wacky "close" families.
