Yeah. I think the windmills start around $70,000.00 and some places outlaw them.

Re: If you no Electricity could you live?

Survive, yes. Live? Eh, depends on the definition of living.

But hey, I got the complete set of Foxfire books, detailed hillbilly wisdom on just about everything. So I could survive.

Living requires internet access and cell phone coverage...

Those are the HUGE ones. There are smaller ones. Not all areas are suited for windmills either. The area where I live is not rated as having sufficient wind for a windmill to pay off.

One can check their area by checking into a wind resource map like this one

Actually, you can set up a wind power station for about $2,000.

Re: If you no Electricity could you live?

Yes, I could and have lived without electricity, though after the last week, I have altered plans a bit...

food (canned goods, fruit trees, stock piles of meat that would need to be used fairly quickly...)
hand powered can opener
candles and coal oil lamp (ahem and wicks and coal oil...)
battery powered radio that I rarely turn on if the power is off anyway.
Extra blankets and warm clothes.
Cudly cat for more extra heat.
Car phone charger.
Container and wood for cooking outside.
A couple of Sterno's-the cans with fuel in them that warm food at banquets.
Gas wall heater that has no electronic ignition and will heat a room without the blower if necessary.
Matches.

I live in the city so I don't have to worry about the well, but most gas stoves now are electronic ignition, so if there is no power, the stove is off anyway...
My dad would insist on flashlights... ok I have flashlights (thanks to dad) but no batteries!

My wish list:
A farm so I'd have eggs and animals and lots of homegrown veggies and fruit.
Partially in ground, well insulated house with a fireplace on the farm so I'd have wood heat and could cook in the fireplace.
A different insurance company so I could have a wood heater and still have an insured house.
Solar water heater-you can make your own and they are neat, but I can't make one in city limits, especially in the front yard...
Well for my farm.
Solar panels.
Greenhouse.
Smaller house (less difficult to heat and cool).
A clothes line, a wringer washer, a wood stove, 40 acres, a horse, a cow, chickens, goats, and a cold underground stream if we are talking about years.

May I suggest a hammock in the summer? Much cooler than a bed-nothing to hold body heat against you. And the real ones from South and Central America are extremely comfortable.

this is another good website:
http://www.lehmans.com
Its owned or influenced heavily by Mennonite/Amish.

Re: If you no Electricity could you live?

I figure if the Castaways could live on an island for 15 years, I could survive a day or two without electricity. Now could I survive MORE then 2 days?

Let me think about that.....

Re: If you no Electricity could you live?

Sure. If you can kill animals for food, build a fire to boil water, find shade when it's hot, and pile on blankets when it's cold, I think survival is a good possibility.

Do you know how to butcher a deer? Would you eat squirrel? Turtle? Rabbit? Whatever it took?
