There has always been a glass ceiling. I am not sure why it still exists because the majority of families are single parent families supported by a female. For some reason males get paid more for the same positions that women also fill. I guess men used to support their families but today we are lucky if they pay their child support

Re: Inequality in Pay - Have you Experienced It?

I don't see it in my business. I've hired several men and women, and there is no inequality whatsoever within my company, or within the client's company that we support.

I just filled a Project Manager position and I offered the only female candidate more than I offered any of the men. She turned me down and accepted another position, but the offer was there - however, she was more qualified than the men I spoke with.

I've never been paid what I'm worth. (Good thing, too! )

Re: Inequality in Pay - Have you Experienced It?

Equal pay for equal work is a problem. However, I have read that part of the reported inequities is that women largely choose professions that pay less (receptionist, service sector etc.) I believe this is true. I wonder how often women are paid less simply because we are women?

Re: Inequality in Pay - Have you Experienced It?

I don't know about how my pay has compared with others.

When I was in the union, each job classification received a certain pay and there were no exceptions as to whether one person was more skilled, had more time on the job, or worked harder. I've noticed over the years that the union there forced workers to perform at low and slow levels.

One time when I was in a position to hire someone in a company where I used to work, I was given a stack of applications and told to contact people and interview them. Then I was told plainly to hire an African American.

Several years ago I was contacted by a manager who talked to me about a job he was going to have available. Then as we talked, he admitted that he was expected to hire either a female or an African American and he would get "two stars" if he hired an African American female.

Are all things the same? (Such as the amount of time the others have been there, position, titles etc)

The woman has been on the job 2 to 3 years longer than the man. Both of them have the same degrees. The woman has about 50 to 75% more responsibilities than the man. They are at the same level. He makes several thousand dollars more per year than the woman (almost $10,000.00 more). My friend is not one to complain. Maybe things will eventually improve.

Jane, I don't know the particulars of the story, but that may be a part of the issue. I think in general many employees will pay what they can get away with paying. If a woman is "not one to complain" or posture for more money, and the man is...that may be part of the issue. I think that in large part, employers know what they can get away with and who they will lose if they do not do right by them.

Re: Inequality in Pay - Have you Experienced It?

I remember once in college I interviewed and was offered an intership with BP. A male friend of mine was also offered an internship. I saw his offer letter and they offered him $200 more a week than me, while I had way more relevant work experience and better grades. I didn't take the job. It was the only time I have been aware of a pay difference...but also the only time it was right in my face. I am typically one of the 5 females in the office (I am a Chemical Engineer)...I figure we make less, but I've never sought to find out if it was true or not.
