Re: Router Advice.

Lessee, you won't find the best routers on the market at Wal-mart. I have a DeWalt 2hp router, a big 3.5hp monster Freud that is in my router table, and a smaller 1.5hp DeWalt for the small stuff.

In a router, you need to have the ability to use either a 1/4 or 1/2 shank. Not all routers will accommodate both chucks. So do not go to Harbor Freight and buy any junk that you can plug in and think it will work. It just might one time, but spend the extra money and either go with Bosch, DeWalt, Porter Cable, and the big Freud. All quality machines.

...oh, THAT kind of router.

I thought this was going to be an interesting thread!

Re: Router Advice.

I get most of my stuff on newegg.com but I would suggest that YOU go to Walmart or Best Buy for yours. Honestly you don't need to spend over a hundred bucks no matter what you get.

We have a Fry's here. That's my alternative to Newegg if I can get it same price without the shipping. Newegg often has zero shipping on some items so it can work out there too

Re: Router Advice.

Scott, I have a 4 port wireless router I was thinking about putting on Ebay. It's made by Linksys. I stopped using it because the phone company sent me a wireless 4 port router when I renewed with them last year. I will make you a sweet deal on it. Lemme know if you are interested. I am pretty sure this is the model I have.

Re: Router Advice.

Routers usually cut down the speed of broadband. The DSL routers don't seem to cut the speed as much. Of course, coming from dial-up anything faster would be a dream.

LOL. But then again with some wiring modifications to your DeWalt you could add a bus that would accomodate a PCI interface and build from that.

Then Scott could brush his teeth, burish steel and download YouTube videos of "Magic Hair" preaching without ever GETTING UP OFF THAT COUCH!

Re: Router Advice.

Read 'em and weep boys. I have a Comcast connection going out through a LinkSys WRT54G 4 Port Ethernet/Wireless Router. Considering that my connection is advertised as 1.5 MB download and I'm getting 6.3, I don't have much to complain about.

Scott - Check out Rico's deal and twist his arm real good. You will find some very good name brand routers starting at around $30 - $40 in most computer retailers. Microcenter is where I shop most of the time - best prices around here but they're not huge nation-wide.

You definitely want a router with a cable set up. The alternative is to run a software firewall like Zone Alarm or to depend upon Windows' own security - which is much improved, but still...

Also a wireless capable router would enable you to host other computer users. Visitors with laptops could jump right on. Your AFF friends could pull our trucks right up on your lawn and post over the same connection. And best of all - you'd never have to GET UP OFF THAT COUCH.
