It was a poor polictial comment that gives the enemy fodder and thus Gramm proves why he didnt become president after Reagan.....
but none the less Uncle Phil was dead right. consider the entire quote:
Gramm said he expects a McCain administration would inherit an economy “weighed down above all by the conviction of many Americans that economic conditions are the worst in two or three decades and that America is in decline.”
The Times quoted him as saying: “You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession. … We have sort of become a nation of whiners. …
“You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline. … We've never been more dominant; we've never had more natural advantages than we have today.”
Dems have been yelping about the bad economy for so long everyone thinks its true. The fact is, it was worse in the last year of Bill Clintons term than it is now!

I currently feel blessed to be in this country. Other than the media I haven't seen anyone in "financial struggle" because of current conditions. Sure it's not as "easy" as it was 10 years ago, but were still so rich compared to the rest of the world.
Questioned whether Gramm, who has been rumored as a potential Treasury secretary for McCain, would still have a position in his administration, the GOP candidate underscored his unhappiness with his former colleague's comments without directly answering the question.
"I think Sen. Gramm would be in serious consideration for ambassador to Belarus," McCain said with a broad smile. "Though I'm not sure the citizens of Minsk would welcome that."

I'm just looking for some balance here. I can only imagine what kind of outcry we would have had on the board if one of Obama's economic advisers implied that the recession and financial concerns were figments of our imagination. People would have been giving stats about foreclosures, gas prices, uncertainty of the dollar, inflation, etc...
It would have been perceived as another naive, elitist comment in my opinion.

The whining part comes from looking to big gov for our weekly pay check.
Goverment should police. When it's not protecting citizens from extortion it's failing part of it's duty. Most whinners aren't wanting a government hand out...they want back what the devil of an industry has stolen through inflated prices and corporate corruption and greed.

I agree that is a part of it. But just wait for the coming town hall meetings where Obama and McCain talk to those in the 'mushy middle' and listen to the questions asked of them......
