We'll have to agree to disagree considering Oprah Winfrey. However, it is a huge stretch to equate her to Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. I think this comparison would never have been made if she had never openly supported Obama.

I read part of a speech where Eric Holder called America a nation of cowards when it comes to racial stuff. Is that what you are talking about?

If it is, it was strong language and he basically disregarded all of the progress that has been made and disrespected the many, many folks who are not cowards.

I add, he should be held responsible for his insult. He should apologize and it should be a sincere apology, without justifications, to the Americans who are not cowards.

Was there anything inherently racist in what he said? You tell me.
I will say he was wrong in calling Americans cowards. That too, is offensive.

I agree with your post that we are a product of our experiences and I agree that I don't see what Eric could have experienced. It was dumb of him to call us a "nation of cowards".
Whoa...okay let me backtrack. I was responding to your post in general without seeing any specific quotes. I do not agree with that quote at all. Such a sweeping generalization is almost always wrong. I would say that such a statement is just as offensive as saying that African-Americans are a bunch of _________. I don't see why people make such sweeping generalizations because it will unvariably offend the millions who don't fit into that category.

I do however believe that a lot of the issues do stem from the fact that we had so many people grow up in a very unhealthy climate (Jim Crow, etc). I think that it would be foolish to think that there would not be some affect on those who grew up in that environment.

And once again it does work both ways. Most of us hear know people of both races who were raised in that time that have opinions that were shaped by that.

It keeps the "racist" wound festering and was totally an irresponsible thing for him to do having achieved the office of Attorney General of the United States of America.

If he was living in a hut, I could have taken the comments as no progress for his race or his life. But, that is not the case. It's over and what is the purpose of keeping wounds festering?

I agree with you here. I believe he was wrong in making such a blanket statement.

However, there is more room for progress when it comes to race relations in this country-- it's not over.

That NY Post cartoon demonstrates it's not over.
Holder could have made the point that "it's not over" without calling Americans cowards.

This was a bad move move and I hope he retracts and apologizes.

I agree with you that both sides have been shaped through history. What I do think is that any person that is elevated to any type of office needs to find ways to unite and not continue the divide.

It is a huge issue. I have a lot of things I would like to say, but unfortunately, I haven't the time today. And that's too bad, because you do such an excellent job at dialoguing!!!

He can apologize, but the words will stand.

Okay, gotta run!

Your lucky Bro. The only yard work we have here is shoveling snow.
