I think it can be a big deal to kids. Like Miss Brat said....she regrets that part of her childhood (not having a tree). My kids do also.

I really don't... though we could have used a few more toys.

Is that what happened to you? I have no clue as to why you are introducing the above opinion. So that's why I'm asking if it was your own personal experience?

Roman type meals? Oh, yeah. I wonder if Nero ate a lot of boudin?

Yeah we can see how xmas was a deterrent to same sex marriage. Did I happen to mention that the homosexuals down here love celebrating the popish tree festival?

I disagree with you, SST. I do not believe I will be held to a "higher standard" about that anymore than I will be held to a higher standard about other erroneous things I was taught. I had a GOOD upbringing, no doubt, but some things were passed on that I don't intend to keep, and haven't since the day I left home.
As far as consulting God's Word--that is exactly what I have done. If I felt the Word forbade me to participate in celebrations or certain days, I would refrain. So far that has not been presented to me in a way I find convincing or even valid.
Do you only celebrate days or holidays that are specifically mentioned in Scripture? Do you celebrate the same days the Jews celebrated? How do you approach which days are special, or do you treat them all the same?

Exactly, all those Mennonite kids survived without a tree!
However, "tree or no tree-no big deal", well not according to Jer 10.

It wasn't just not having a tree. I think I could have handled that okay. It was no gifts, no celebration, nothing. One time in particular that sticks out in my mind when I was in 6th or 7th grade, my class at school drew names for exchanging gifts, and I wasn't allowed to participate--but I still had to go to school the day of the party. I was mortified. To this day, I still don't understand why my parents didn't just keep me home that day. It was also a sore spot with other members of our family who did (and do) celebrate, so it made time with them strained, or we wouldn't visit at all until after Christmas was over. My Dad (who I resemble a LOT in character, btw ) couldn't resist talking about the pagan holidays, sometimes even just teasing other people about it, but inevitably it always caused a problem.
*sigh*
I think I sound bitter. LOL!! I'm not. It just wasn't one of the positive parts of my childhood, and I determined that I would make it up to myself when I grew up--and I am!!!!

What a laugh, it's amazing how some will scream and whine, over dress standards, then turn right around an celebrate a Roman Catholic holiday, and defend it like a junkyard dog. the irony.
