That "stance" you take is the issue. Don't come across as denying pro-choice, when you personally believe in it. They have been for it and denied it saying they evolved.
My problem with that is, especially, someone commenting that his "conservative" Mormon roots would serve him well. Mormons are against abortion. For him to tout his mission experiences, etc., and that later in life he had an epiphany? That is just weird and hypocritical to his beliefs.

You can't wise up later in life? I know a couple that got SAVED in their 70s. As long as you're alive, there's room for growth and change. A wise man changes his mind, a fool never does.
