You can ignore why we "may" have confidence which is because "we do his commands" all you want but it is what it is.

I have avoided nothing but you ignore my question I asked.

How do we continue to abide?
By continuing to love Him with all our heart, soul & mind.

How are we called his friends?
Because out of a relationship we have with Him we do what is pleasing in His sight, which is never enough.

I now add how do we have confidence? Which has actually been answered but I want to verify your understanding.

I have confidence in what He has done for me and will continue to do for me and through me.

(added) 1Jn 2:28 And now, little children, abide in him(how do we do that and what is abiding based on?), so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.

Also your confidence is not what the actual judgment is. I can have confidence I did well on a test but my confidence in my answers and the reality of what is judged are two different things. You may think you answered/responded rightly but the point is your response will be judged justly by God. The judgment of our response of our heart is a little more complicated than 1+1=2 but at the same time just as simple.
Your "test" analogy only works if it a "closed" book test. We have an "open" book test, if you will. I know exactly what the answers are. Where it is subjective, on Christ the solid Rock I stand.......

But the King actually WANTS me to pass the test. He not only gives me the test in advance, but He also gives me the answers and THEN helps me take the test and on top of that, He has mercy where I have not done so well. What more confidence do I need?

No wonder I sleep well at night. I am in the hollow of His hand and underneath are the everlasting arms! It just doesn't get any better than that!

either works but you still have to obey his commands and do what he says and it still is judged not by you but him. My point was simply of knowing what it takes and being judged it was not about open or closed. We know his commandments but do we do them and are faithful. That is the point and Jesus is clear.... Exert all effort to enter or to agonize to enter... that doesn't seem to follow your test view well. Also the many are called but few are chosen doesn't seem to fit your emphasis on how it is done test view very well either. My point on the test was simply a matter of knowing from my heart and confidence vs God's perfect judgment. I will have to wait and see though I know his commands and I believe and trust I did them. The heart is deceitful. Thus really your test view has nothing to do with my point.
