A few times when we took a family out after church I would make recommendations as to "what was good" ....lol....Usually, my husband will say, "just order anything you want...a steak, or anything" ...and that was OK, too because steak was not usually over $20.00 something. I can't imagine having someone order an entree that cost $400.00. So inconsiderate. ...Maybe he thought the waiter said, "$40.00" instead of $400.00...What I would have done is to RESTATE the amount - probably more than once. I would want that person to KNOW from the tone of my voice that I thought that amount was extravagant...I do not believe there would be anything uncouth about that.

If I had been the pastor I would have asked the waiter to excuse us for a minute and then I would have told the other preacher if he was going to order that he was going to pay for it himself.

Then I would have asked for a little meeting afterwards to counsel him on moderation, good manners, and not taking advantage of peoples good will.

I guess I just assumed that he had him in to preach, that's why I said evangelist. Maybe not...

My response to the host is "YOU are familiar with this restaurant what do you recommend".

Well it could have been a visiting pastor or missionary.

Yes I have gotten a nine dollar offering too.
I go where I get an invite I don't ask for an offering.
Feed me Sardines and a cracker and I'll be thankful.
Listen a UC Pastor treated me good before ,probably some of the best treatment I have gotten.

I don't think there's a missionary on this planet who could order a $400 lobster!! Most of them see so much poverty, they would be thinking about how much $400 could buy in their country.
