No, but take it as a compliment, graciously. I am feeling old tonight.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101130/...leaks_security

US says leaks are a crime, threatens prosecution.

Striking back, the Obama administration branded the WikiLeaks release of more than a quarter-million sensitive files an attack on the United States Monday and raised the prospect of criminal prosecutions in connection with the exposure. The Pentagon detailed new security safeguards, including restraints on small computer flash drives, to make it harder for any one person to copy and reveal so many secrets.

The young Army Pfc. suspected of stealing the diplomatic memos, many of them classified, and feeding them to WikiLeaks may have defeated Pentagon security systems using little more than a Lady Gaga CD and a portable computer memory stick.

Even after 9/11 it was that easy to defeat the Pentagon security system!
Makes me wonder if it hadn't been tried earlier because no one thought the Pentagon could be that dumb.

It's very complicated, I think. The diplomacy required to negotiate with many governments that are less free than our own will always look like hypocrisy if all things are revealed. Our spy network is alive and well amongst our enemies. Deception is at it's core of course.

The question is not are we being "above board", but rather, "Are we protecting the vital secrecy required to achieve the maximum influence for democracy and freedom in the world"?

Our ambassadors and elected officials should be accountable for their every move - including those that are classified. That does not mean they should be disseminated for the public via mass media.

It makes me wonder, at least a wee bit, whether these leaks were not intentional. The US has been embarrassed - yes. But what else might come out of this?

Re: Wikileaks

I agree it's complicated. And I'm not saying that state secrets should be exposed. But what struck me was that Ferd was okay with certain goverment agencies not being "above board". And yet there have been quite a few threads complaining about other goverment agencies. Just struck me as a double standard, that's all.

Was involved with the leaking. I doubt the PC police can connect the dots.

in what respect? I will be happy to iron out any precieved double standard on my part.

yes entirely logical.

national security is vastly different than things like nathionalized healthcare or tax rates or methods for stimulating the economy or even things like the impact of regulating green house gas emmissions.
