I agree that we can't have the same 'ol same 'ol. Yes, he does have a very long political history. It's just that we worked with him a lot during our homeschool days and he was right there with us on every issue - holding back the hounds. I came to really like him a lot.
But, listen, it will also be a win for us if Medina were to get in. I am reading and searching all of this out. My only problem is that I don't see how she will be able to work her tax plans. She said on a few of her interviews that these things need to be worked out. I want her to work that out before I elect her. That is just too much like what Obama keeps saying. I don't like it. It's too uncertain. But if she irons that out and I find that out, I will post it here.
I've asked several of her supporters and they have no answers. They are saying it's a good question, but they don't know. They just keep saying, "We want to own our property and keep our guns." LOL! I need some economic and fiscal policy to go with that.
It wouldn't hurt my feelings if she won, but I'm voting for Rick Perry.
I'm with you on that. As I said before, really I can live with any of the 3. I guess if I'm going to make a radical move this is the "safest" time I feel I can do that. I am sometimes to conservative for my own good.

Part of me wants her to win because they keep talking about her only having $68,483 for her campaign as of January 21. LOL! They are saying that she got a big boost after the last debate, which was really Hutchinson's votes and that she will fade by March 2. Part of you wants her to prove them wrong! LOL!
I'm going to be loyal to Perry because he was loyal to us. Totally stepped in when they tried to take away our Conscientious Exemption on vaccines, CPS trying to step into the homeschoolers backyard, etc. We never had to beg him to help us and we always knew he would step in right away. No worries there. I feel I owe him. LOL!
So, if Medina wins, I still paid Perry back. I can live with that.
Here is what I have been telling people about the property tax elimination...
I keep hearing people complaining that this would raise the sales tax rate significantly and would only help the wealthiest people. Also, that it would cut down on "tourist dollars". What people don't seem to understand is that "broadening the tax base" means taxing things that other states already tax but Texas does not. Some of the things mentioned have been legal services, limo services... I don't know about you but I don't use those things very often. Groceries and drugs would still not be taxed. To keep revenues at their current level, the tax rate may only have to be raised a little bit or not at all, especially if property sales are taxed. Also, people are saying that taxing property sales would hurt, not help. Look at property sales this way... You buy a home with say, a 10% tax. You roll the tax into your mortgage just like you do for the car sales tax. A home for 100K would give you a tax of 10000. 10000 over 30 yrs of mortgage pmts. would be around 60-70/month or LESS than 1,000/year. But at the end of 30 years, you're done. You OWN your home. If you're at retirement age, you don't have the worry of losing your home because you're now on a fixed income. Also, it could increase your buying power because you would be able to afford a higher monthly mortgage payment without the high cost of property taxes that you pay into your escrow. And all this stuff about revenues falling because people will travel out of state or to Mexico to shop...if the tax rate goes up only 1 or 2 %, it would still be lower than the cost of gas to travel somewhere else to do your shopping. Also, a SALES TAX as opposed to a property tax, would mean that illegal aliens would be contributing as much as everybody else if they buy things in Texas - at least until something is done about illegal immigration.
And here is my response to someone who was arguing about a 4% increase in sales tax...... See More
The sales tax may not go as high as that and probably wouldn't from all the reports I've read. But, even if it did, the benefits from eliminating the property tax would outweigh any negative effects of a higher sales tax. I know my family doesn't make large purchases very often. And say we spend $1000 (we never spend that much) per month on necessary and discretionary items. Groceries and drugs still won't be taxed so that is not included in the $1000. So with your scenario of $40 MORE that we'd be spending every month due to an increased sales tax, that would more than be made up for by the $300 LESS I'd be paying to my escrow account every month for my property taxes. And I think I remember when we were house-hunting that I actually live in a relatively low property tax area comparatively speaking. So people in higher property tax areas would see an even higher positive gain in their wallets. And when my husband retires and we've paid our mortgage for 30 years, our fixed income won't be overburdened by the taxes on the property we "own". We might even have enough money to spend on our grandchildren.
and as for renters...
Property tax elimination could lower their rent so the argument that "I don't own property so I don't care" is asinine... Plus think about what property tax elimination could do for the cost of goods and services produced in Texas. The less money that producers have to pay in property tax, the less they have to charge for their goods/services to make a profit. Property tax doesn't just affect the people who own property...

This makes sense to me. The less you pay in property taxes the more you have to spend on the economy OR save.

But here's the clincher:
Medina’s platform has been focused on eliminating Property taxes. Her supporters misquote her to the public where if you do not understand the way Property taxes are set up you’d think she is going to do it. But when challenged with the facts that Texas has NO PROPERTY TAXES they are collected at the local level which is written into the Texas Constitution. It would take an Amendment to do it. Which would take a referendum and the Texas Congress to vote on.
Just putting in more info, Esther in case I need to drag it somewhere else. LOL! Thought you'd be interested anyway since your a political junkie too!
Medina tax plan draws opponents
"Texas will benefit from a broad-based sales tax to fund the essential elements of government service," said Medina, citing that study. "We will see a $3 billion increase in net personal income and add 150,000 jobs."
But what Medina didn't explain during the debate is that the study she relies on would raise the sales tax rate to 9 percent and would also begin to tax home and commercial property sales to offset the end of property taxes.
The Texas Association of Realtors opposes the idea, pointing to the burden on first time buyers. TAR says homeowners would also lose the property tax deduction on their federal taxes that might not be equaled by a sales tax deduction.
The Realtors group says the sales tax deduction was extended through this year, but was not made permanent by Congress in 2008.
The average priced home in Dallas, as listed by the Dallas Central Appraisal District, would go up in cost from $188,000 to $205,000 with the 9 percent sales tax charge.
The study Medina points to would double the number of goods and services taxed. But the Austin-based Center for Public Policy Priorities -- which is an advocate for low and moderate income citizens on social and economic issues -- claims that would hurt low-income families.
CPPP says the data show a higher, broader sales tax is regressive, and would consume a higher percentage of a low-income family’s income compared to a higher-income household.
At a 9 percent sales tax rate, $100 of goods or services would jump to $109.
But Medina disagrees with the CPPP evaluation about a higher sales tax. "That is the least burdensome tax to the society, the least burdensome tax to the economy,” she said.
Of course, state lawmakers would need to go along with any proposed change. And with powerful business forces and advocates for the poor opposing such a structural shift in the way we pay for public services, Medina would find ending local property taxes very difficult.

I thought about the tax deduction from IRS as well.
How often do you see a tax reduction? Not very often. I "think" she was wanting this to be placed on the ballot for the Texans to vote on. IF that happens I guess it would outlaw taxes? But I "think" the Lt Governor has to be the one to put it on the ballot if I heard correctly.
