I woke up early this morning because I had to get a lot of things done. Aside from the usual showering and getting dressed, I had to put my pork roast in my slow cooker along with potatoes and veggies, get the pinata for SS out to the car, gather lights and stick drama equipment, and get to the church by 8:30.
Ok, so now you've noticed the time. I'm not running late, however. I had to take time to tell you the sad tale you are about to read.
Just before we were leaving and the kids are getting things into the car, I'm getting my roast ready. I cut open the package and smelled it (I always do this). Smelled like rotten eggs. Ok, maybe it's me, since I'm used to eating venison (I've noticed that even hamburger smells funny to me now).
I put the roast and the juices with it into my pot. Looks ok. Doesn't smell ok. The package said it's good until the 17th. That's 9 days away. I put the lid on it without doing anything else and called LadyRev for a second opinion, as she was headed this way to get to the church.
She came over as I was upstairs finishing my hair, and I heard her say quite loudly, THAT'S GROSS, TAKE IT BACK, and she left. Wonderful. Now I'm behind in my dinner preparation.
I put the meat into several bags and tied them well. Threw it in the back seat and went to church to get our stuff together for the stick drama presentation. We took the kids to practice a couple times but the CD player wouldn't work. Thankfully, it's not the one we need for the presentation.
Forget that. Kids, you will just have to remember the movements and follow me.
So I leave for WalMart with my stinky roast. I enter the store and the greeter looks at me funny. I said to her, Just give me a sticker, you don't want me to open this bag. She laughed and put the sticker on my hand and I went to the counter.
The girl there took my word for it...LOL....as she didn't want to know what it smelled like either. She offered me another one, and I just smiled and took my money out of the store.
I went to a nearby store and got one from there. I get home to discover it isn't boneless. *sigh* Ah well, I think we can avoid the bone.
So my veggies are in and I'm having a cup of milk before getting to the church. They are serving breakfast anyway so I have time. Dinner will be at 2 instead of noon, but I guess that's ok too.
Beats eating smelly roast, right?
All is now well. I apologize if you can't find tissues.

Maybe that roast was meant to be dated to be okay until the 7th because it would be a little unusual to date a roast to be okay 9 days later from the time it was packaged. Meat won't keep that long ordinarily. There was definitely some big mistake there.
Hope the rest of your day turns out much better and goes much smoother than your morning!

That's possible but this was a vacuum sealed package, so they generally last longer. My pastor's wife said to me this morning, You buy your meat at WalMart??
I don't typically buy meat since I eat mostly venison or chicken breast.

Go figure.....she'll eat Bambi after killing him, but she won't eat Mary's little lamb that someone else killed. I don't get it.........

Lamb, when done right, is excellent... better than beef.
I've had it before and I love it, but it isn't only LR I have to pay attention to, but her husband as well.
I made that wonderful turkey according to you and Ferd for Thanksgiving. While everyone else loved it, he gave me a hard time about how awful it was. He said if I make it again next year, he isn't coming.
I already bought the ingredients.......LOL!

Was the roast previously frozen. I have noticed that when I defrost pork it tends to smell really gross as the blood separates from the meat. It has the smell of death!!

I wouldn't know if it has been frozen. I bought it last night and put it in my fridge. This also had 'solution' in it and it was vacuum sealed, like how they do corned beef.
I've decided not to buy meat there ever again. I go to the little store by my house most of the time and although they are a little higher, it's worth it most of the time.
And they also sell the italian beef seasoning I used to buy in southern Illinois....it's locally made there and I thought in moving here I'd never have it again.
