In reality, the Bible teaches that sex, wine, and food are all gifts given to man by God and are to be partaken of with respect to certain limits and only in moderation.

The Christian life should never be the picture of excess.

I suppose that this will be misunderstood, but there it is anyway.

Brother, I understand.

Does your local pastor teach about the dangers of gluttony and excess?

Are many afraid of the subject because of their own bulging waistline?
Answers that others on here won't provide:

1. We do never hear much at conferences about gluttony, overeating, laziness, or excess of lifestyles because a huge majority of those attending are practicing gluttony, overeating, laziness or excess of lifestyle.

2. The Bible teaches us to refrain from gluttony and do all things in moderation and temperance is one of the fruits of the spirit, along side love, faith, and the others.

3. I have never heard a pastor preach against it.

4. Yes, they are afraid to preach against it with a bulging waistline. It would be hypocritical.

This question is "Is gluttony still a sin"?...Isn't it Once a sin, always a sin?
Does a bulging waistline equal gluttony?

Many times I believe it does...unless there is some type of genetic or hormonal imbalance.

I do believe I asked a question. How about answering mine, absent the Socratic influence?

Websters:
gluttony
One entry found for gluttony.
Main Entry: glutˇtony
Pronunciation: 'gl&t-nE, 'gl&-t&-nE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -tonˇies
1 : excess in eating or drinking
2 : greedy or excessive indulgence

Fat - obese

*Definition:

Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy. There are many ways to determine if a person is obese, but experts believe that a person's body mass index (BMI) is the most accurate measurement of body fat for children and adults.

Nearly two-thirds of the United States population is overweight. Anyone more than 100 pounds overweight is considered morbidly obese.

Consuming more calories than you burn leads to being overweight and, eventually, obesity. The body stores unused calories as fat. Work with your health care provider to determine how many calories you need to consume each day to stay healthy.

Great reply. And I do not disagree with the definition of Webster. However, could you give some Biblical context/definition that shows "gluttony" to be considered a sin? Thanks!

Biblical teachings of moderation: (Deuteronomy 21:20) and self-control (Galatians 5:23; Titus 2:12).

It is mentioned most in the book of Proverbs, e.g.,

* “Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.” (Proverbs 23:20-21)

* “He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.” (Proverbs 28:7)

* “When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.” (Proverbs 23:2)
