Tammy Faye, suffering from cancer, tells fans goodbye

She was always flamboyant, sometimes outrageous, and now she apparently is near death.

Tammy Faye Bakker Messner announced Wednesday on her Web site that doctors have stopped treating her cancer in a goodbye note to her fans. "I am down ... to 65 pounds, and look like a scarecrow. I need God's miracle to swallow," she wrote.

In 1996 Tammy Faye was diagnosed with colon cancer. In 2004 she learned the cancer had returned, this time in her lungs. In her note Wednesday she referred to her "sick stomach."

She said her daughter, Tammy Sue, and friends are staying with her while her husband, Roe Messner, continues to build church buildings.

The former televangelist came to fame with her former husband, Jim Bakker, as hosts of the PTL Club television show and related ministries, which ended in financial and sexual scandals.

In recent years she rehabilitated her image somewhat by appearing on reality TV shows.

In the final paragraph of her Web statement, she let a little of her old effervescent self come through as she tried to encourage others with debilitating illnesses.

"To those of you who are suffering as I. ... 'Don't give up'!"

This indeed is sad. Cancer is a horrible disease.

I read this yesterday and almost posted it here. She must really be in bad shape to be down to 65 lbs and for them to have stopped treatment.

One more example that it doesn't matter how high you go in life when it comes to fame and fortune you are still just a human being and subject to as much pain and suffering as the bum in the streets.

It's kinda strange for me, watching the baby boom generation starting to die off in greater numbers. My pops is already well into his 60s and my mom turns 60 next year. My how time flies. Makes me feel old.

Tammy Faye has taken much flack from the media and the general public; however, there has always been such a light that shines from this woman. She has demonstrated that she was a survivor and through her testimony many people have been encouraged to live for Christ.

From someone who has a terminal illness, I can say that she is an inspiration and I trust that if God doesn't heal her on this earth, she will find peace in death.

She is a monumental force of talent that surely will be missed.
