Well, I have to agree. I think sometimes our experiences and views, when voiced, may appear to come across as a broadbrush. It doesn't make those views or experiences wrong in the evaluation, but it doesn't always involve the totality. So, on that note, I can agree with you as well.

Yes, Stephen, exactly! I do the same thing when I do a furniture makeover - throw myself into it with all my zeal and passion. Not much different than other things, I don't think. LOL!

Can you elaborate? I don't think I understand how the Flynn Effect applies.

Hi MissB!
When you drew a link between a younger generation of men and a growing resistance to “waffling and inconsistency” in their elders, I couldn’t help but think of billionaire Marc Zuckerberg’s recent statement “young people are just smarter.” Are they? Maybe. Many researchers think there's a connection, and I think you’re on to something.
When I mentioned the Flynn Effect, I was impying a correlation between some of the elements in Flynn's studies with the observations noted in your statement. Put simply, today’s fast-moving, ever changing environment, increased competition in academics, and overall more complex technologies pressuring our young generation, could in fact be responsible for the increased level of scrutiny with “old time religion.” Maybe it’s access to more information. Maybe it’s better nutrition or better genetics. Maybe it’s a little of everything. Whatever it is, it's definitely increasing the gap between the 'ole school crowd and the up and coming "young bucks."

NTK - It is arrogance and pride.
I remember when I was young and thought this way, also.
When this generation grows up, they will realize this.
Every generation believes that they are "the one".

Re: The State of the UPC
NTK - As part of my job, I "mentor" young newly hired employees. Currently I am mentoring 2. It is amazing how much they don't know, that they don't know.
I have personal, daily, experience with this. I am not just talking "out of my hat".

Re: The State of the UPC
NTK - I had not thought about it in this light, but could it be arrogance and pride that is driving some of our "young bucks"?
Instead of "waffling and inconsistency"?

You could be right.
Assuming you are, do you attribute this to learned behavior or another phenomenon?

Re: The State of the UPC
In a general sense, I believe it would vary for each individual situation.
In specific situations that I know, it has varied greatly.
Individual motivations have greatly varied and sometimes I believe the reasons given publically are put out to "mask" the real reason(s).
