Mental illness is a serious issue. It is my opinion however, that if humans would make better decisions, then sometimes that mental illness would never manifest itself.
This goes for Christians and non-Christians.
Why should a person relinquish their right to experience happiness? Why do humans do the things that humans do?

That is a valid point. However, it's not always decisions that cause mental illness, life changing events can be the cause as well.
