I think many people subconciously jump on the standards bandwagon because they can't believe salvation is easy to obtain. Deep down inside people think they have to "earn" their salvation. People worshipping non-biblical standards have no better chance of making heaven than the catholics in third world countries who flog themselves each year around easter.
