Re: What is the purpose of Hell?
Derech,
A soul is a living being. Adam was a living soul. However, the human person is composed of body (soma), soul (psuche), and spirit (pneuma). The body is the material part of man that goes to the grave and is destroyed (until the resurrection of course). The soul is the immaterial psyche or sentient and thinking part of a man. Upon death the soul enters the afterlife. The spirit (pneuma or breath) is the animating life force flowing between the body and soul. This animating life force returns to God upon death.
When a man dies he simultaneously experiences loss of life (spirit), the destruction of his body, and enters into the afterlife.
So is a man destroyed upon death? Yes. An aspect of his being is destroyed and is in the grave.
So does a man enter the afterlife? Yes. An aspect of his being enters the afterlife to be judged.
Both realities are very real and simultaneous.
