What does "I rode up with and want to go down with you mean?" fellowship? friends? Was he not an adulterer.
It probably meant that no matter how bad the consequences of his "bad" decision were, that Anthony Mangun would remain his friend and stand with him.
What would you have suggested? Total disownment and cutting all ties, I guess? It's extremely hard to see people restored when you turn your back on them, but I realize that's what a lot of folks in the church advocate.
Just don't be surprised when sinners see that and aren't compelled to the Gospel.
