You did not quote all the verse. The last part of the verse explains that when the waters were 40 days the ark was lifted up. That does not mean the flood was only 40 days on the earth. It's just that it took that long before the ark rose off the ground.
Genesis 7:17 KJV And the flood was forty days upon the earth;
and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.

Genesis 7:24
And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.

From the start of the flood til the ark arose was 40 days.
The 150 days includes these 40 days.
Quote:
Genesis 8:3
And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the one hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.

This is the same as 7:24.
The 150 days speaks of the flood from start until it started to abate.
That makes six months and ten days from start of the flood until the waters began to recede.
Once the waters began to abate, the ark came to land on the Mount Ararat in the Seventh month. So, 6 months and ten days brings us 37 days away from the time the ark stopped floating and landed on Ararat -- which was 7 months and 17 days.
