PO, in the world we live in, AL freed the slaves. no one thinks he was a modern day saint. I guess I am left wondering why you want to judge this man by todays standards when clearly on the subject of slavery he was a proressive for his era.

Thomas Jeffereson, refused to put the word "free" in the declaration of indepenance because he did not want to exclude black slaves from the idea that "all men are created equal" but he owned slaves. do we judge him by the standards of modernity? of course not.

you cannot take a man out of his era and judge him by a set of values that he has had no exposure to!

What ever AL was, both the good and the bad, has to be judged by the era in which he lived.

You said today that you might vote for Rudy G. you said your reasoning was because you were voting for President not for priest.

so excuse me if I am baffeled by this commitment to making sure everyone knows just how evil the 147year dead guy was.
You can't call him a progressive for his era unless he was setting slaves free for moral reasons. That is my opinion.

I am judging or rather evaluating him by the standards of his day more than ours. I am trying to reconcile these pictures of this tall man who walked miles to return a few pennies and wondering his thoughts on human flesh.

Wasn't there a difference in he and (I forgot his name. My mind is totally blank. The guy that would go out into the woods and pray after studying the Bible for his law practice and found truth. What was his name?) when studying the Bible for their law practices? Most certainly.

Rudy would be standing behind whatever law the Supreme Court has laid down, which is how he stands and lawfully he must, saying the states have the rights to make their own laws. Again, a little different, IMO.
