Prayer by proxy?

A few weeks ago an individual at church asked to “stand in” for someone who was out sick. He asked to receive prayer in place of the sick person.
Afterwards I asked one of the leaders in the church if what occurred was biblical or not. He then replied something to the effect of “I’ve seen this all my life”.
What do you think about this practice?
