Cool... what's the brand of their mandoline? That will be something to hang onto, and they would be very proud if you'd learn to play it...
You can chord the mandoline, but it sounds better to pick it.. it's tuned like a fiddle. You pick the melody and catch, usually a open string next to the one that your playing the melody on. On YouTube, you can look up mandoline lessons. There's some pretty good vidios on it...
